On the way to a landslide re-election victory, Mayor Robert F. Wagner and his entourage stopped for a quintessential campaign snack: a Nathan's hot dog at Coney Island.
When this photo published in The Times on October 21, 1957, it was reported that Mr. Wagner "did the required eating, greeting and talking while walking more than a mile along the Coney Island Boardwalk." Times photographer Eddie Hausner appeared to capture Mr. Wagner giving a stern look toward John Cashmore, the Brooklyn Borough President, who also joined in on the "frankfurter ritual," which even today remains a staple of New York politics.
