On Nov. 10, 1989, the border that divided socialist East Berlin from capitalist West Berlin was torn asunder, bringing together a country long-separated by the politics of the Cold War. The Times reported on the boisterous celebration following the historic event, writing that "thousands of East Berliners - of all ages, from every way of life - were walking, biking and driving to crossing points in the wall and entering the western half of the city, a place they could only gaze at just hours before."
