Attendees lined Seventh Avenue in Harlem on the sidewalk, fire escapes, out windows and on rooftops to watch the sixth annual African American Day parade, which marched from 110th to 142nd Street in September of 1974. The parade’s theme, “Unity Is the Solution to Black Survival,” was highlighted in the wide range of participants that included Black leaders from various fields and backgrounds, from politics to art to activism. Times reporter Laurie Johnston described the mood at the 70-float event, writing “The parade, which brought out some autumn finery amid the end-of-summer informality, had the atmosphere of a family outing and neighborhood gala, with little emphasis on militance or politics.”
