Times photographer Jim Wilson took advantage of a dreary winter night to capture the appropriate mood for a photo to accompany an article about the struggles musicians face in order to get to Carnegie Hall.

The legendary New York music hall is home to the greats. Tchaikovsky conducted there the night it opened; George Gershwin premiered his Concerto in F there; and giants Arturo Toscanini, Leonard Bernstein, Leopold Stokowski, Vladimir Horowitz, Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma all played there. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Well, you know the old answer: practice, practice (and then head to 57th Street and Seventh Avenue).
