Description

This Hvass & Hannibal illustration, depicting abstract digital data, accompanied The Times news analysis article, “Learning to See Data,” published March 27, 2015. The image is part of our collection of editorial illustrations being offered for the first time ever to the public as unframed or framed fine-art prints.

The article, written by Benedict Carey, discusses the need for data analysts to develop an instinct for what’s important.” Carey writes, “And so it is in many fields, whether predicting climate, flagging potential terrorists or making economic forecasts. The information is all there, great expanding mountain ranges of it. What’s lacking is the tracker’s instinct for picking up a trail, the human gut feeling for where to start looking to find patterns and meaning.”

Hvass & Hannibal is a multi-disciplinary arts and design studio based in Copenhagen. Since 2006, its founders, Nan Na Hvass and Sofie Hannibal, have worked in close collaboration on illustrative and conceptual design in a number of different fields for clients in Europe, Asia and the United States. Whether in the digital realm or on a three-dimensional scale, the studio takes projects from esoteric illustrative beginnings to a full art direction and graphic-design solution, all in-house.
